DIY: Easy Off The Shoulder Side Split Summer Dress

I'm so excited to finally be posting my first 'real' fashion post on jessleonh!! I whipped this dress up on good friday after being inspired by a similar design by A Pair & a Spare.
You will need:
- Sewing machine
- 1.5m of cotton jersey fabric (please note this dress is made for a size 6-8 and you may need more or less fabric depending on your size)
- Cotton of matching colour
- Scissors
- Pins
- Tape measure or ruler
- Elastic
Method:
1. Start by cutting the fabric to the size you want around your body. Add a few extra centimetres to allow for the gather and to keep it flowy.
2. Fold over approximately 5cm from the top of where you want your dress to start and sew. This is where your elastic will go.
3. Join your long sides together lengthways and sew to create the tube part of the dress, leaving about 15cms free at the end for your side split.
4. For the side split, Create a normal hem on each part of the fabric by folding and sewing each part separately.
5. Thread your elastic through the back section of the dress, pull to your desired gather (it helps to try it on at this stage) and sew to secure at each end.
6. Measure how long you want your dress to be. Cut and sew hem the bottom. What you don't use will become the arm detailing.
7. For the arm detailing cut two strips (mine were about 75cm x 18cm) and fold in half. Sew down the longest side and one short end then flip inside out. Stitch the final edge down and you're ready to attach.
8. Attach the arm ties to the sides of the dress. I found it was more comfortable to sew them about 2cm in front of the side seam.
And that's it!
The thing I love about this dress besides it being quite simple to make, is that it is unbelievably comfortable and has the ability to be either dressed up or down.

I saw the "a pair and a spare" post about it and I definitely want to make it after seeing your result.
